WEDNESDAY, November 1      All Saints

1 John 3:1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

When my oldest child was born, I thought he was perfect. Like most first-time parents, I believed my job was to keep him perfect and grease the skids for ever-greater joy and achievement. That illusion faded fast. My children, two sons and a daughter, have been created for risk and struggle, trial and error—just like the rest of us. We have all grown from the skinned knees and stretched souls.

My children are my children, no matter what. They have had ups and downs, won awards and fallen flat on their faces, received generous breaks and thoughtlessly had their hearts broken. To be a parent means being exhilarated and terrified and ecstatic right along with my children. My life is bound to theirs at the heart.

This is why I find it so astonishing that God decided to make each of us a child of God. Multiply my own sense of connection to my children by a gazillion, and I have a dim sense of God’s tender vulnerability to and engagement with each one of us. Our lives are bound to God’s—at the heart.

MOVING FORWARD: On All Saints’ Day, give thanks for the life and witness of your favorite saint.
