THURSDAY, November 1     All Saints

Wisdom 3:1 But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them.

At times I have pictured the saints like superheroes. They may not have invisible jets or capes like Wonder Woman or Superman, but for me, saints are incredible and exotic. Occasionally I see glimpses of truth, like on a cold, wet, January day in 2014, when I gathered with several hundred people to honor the martyrdom of a saint.

Following prayers, the crowd venerated the relics of the saint. I saw a speck of bone encased in gold and a pair of gloves worn by the martyr on the day he died. Both seemed small and vulnerable—very much human, very much like me. I reached into my coat pocket to touch my own gloves.

In that tender and tactile moment, I realized how very human are the saints of the Church and how their humanity gives us a fuller image of God’s plan. As I left the church, I couldn’t help but sing a song of the saints of God. God help me to be one too.

MOVING FORWARD: Remember your favorite saint in your prayer time today.
