THURSDAY, March 1

Luke 10:3-4 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road.

When we moved from New Jersey to Minnesota, we enrolled our oldest in a “progressive” second-grade class, where the students were required to pack up their things in a small plastic box—crayons, pencils, scissors, papers—and move it and themselves from room to room several times a day. Our son spilled the contents of his box routinely. He seemed swamped. Like most mothers, I worried.

Then he came home with a painting he had done in art class. Brilliant colors stacked horizontally: Orange, red, green, blue. Down the middle, an alien rode a skateboard, hands outstretched, feet balanced, and antennae sticking up. Seeing it, I knew our son was keeping his balance just fine by sailing lightly in his new world.

Jesus suggests that his disciples travel lightly when sharing the Good News. He tells them to forgo any baggage, stay only when invited, and move on quickly when rejected. Keep your antennae up—there are beautiful colors all around you.

MOVING FORWARD: What feelings or items are you holding too tightly? What are some ways you can work toward traveling lightly?
