TUESDAY, August 1

Mark 6:37a But [Jesus] answered them, “You give them something to eat.”

In Mark’s account of the feeding of 5,000, the apostles have just returned from an incredible adventure. Out on their own with minimal supplies, they cured the sick, cast out demons, and spread the good news to strangers. However, when they reunite with Jesus, the apostles are suddenly incapable of fixing a meal.

There have been plenty of nights when I have looked into my backpack and wondered how I would make a meal out of Ramen noodles and powdered milk. That very day, I might have climbed a 2,000-foot granite face, but the simple act of cooking seems impossible. But, when options are limited, it’s amazing how far a little gratitude, hunger, and creativity will go.

In my ministry, I often forget what I have with me. I forget the wild country through which God has led me—the strengths of the good people around me, and I forget that we all hunger for God and that Jesus has prepared a table in our midst. Anytime I think the food is running out and there are no more options, Jesus shows me a new way.

MOVING FORWARD: Send a care package to a child at summer camp.
