SUNDAY, December 10     Advent 2

2 Peter 3:14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish.

This is the time of the year when my daughter becomes antsy. As the child of a deeply blended family, she celebrates Christmas six different ways. By December 10, she knows that the first extravaganza is about ten days away. She’ll wake up, run into my darkened bedroom, and shake me awake: “What day is it?!” When I tell her it’s only December 10, she will moan dramatically, “When will Christmas ever get here?!?”

The days grow infinitely longer as the time to an anticipated event gets shorter. And yet Peter advises us to wait in peace. Don’t agitate and agonize over when God’s kingdom will arrive. Don’t wish or worry the days away. Find comfort in the fact that Christmas and the kingdom will come exactly on time. Appreciate this precious and present moment for what it is—one of many countless, measureless, and matchless blessings from our Lord.

MOVING FORWARD: Set a timer for two minutes. Close your eyes, clear your mind, and find peace and quiet in the waiting.
