TUESDAY, March 10

John 7:37-38 Jesus said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’”

I live on a river. I have taken hundreds of photographs of the water at dawn, the water at sunset, the water with ice floes, the water all choppy during a storm, the water reflected in mirrored office buildings, the water alive with gulls and small boats and cruise liners. I will never have my fill of photographing the water. It reminds me of my thirst for wholeness and connection. It reminds me of my thirst for belonging and loving kindness.

I have drunk from the waters of scripture and from the waters of Jesus’ love for me. I have had my thirst slaked again and again over the course of my life. I am a believer who trusts in Jesus’ promise that rivers of living water will flow from my heart.

How long, O Lord, until the outpouring of my heart can satisfy my thirsty neighbor’s heart?
