THURSDAY, May 10     Ascension Day

Acts 19:24-25 A man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the artisans. These he gathered together, with the workers of the same trade, and said, “Men, you know that we get our wealth from this business.”

I had never thought of Paul as an economic disruptor until studying this passage. Much like how Lyft and Airbnb have changed taxis and lodging, Paul’s message disrupts several industries. Artisans, silversmiths, and priests face the challenge of squaring off against the gospel. But their trinkets, idols, and rules are no match for the will and love of God.

God is not to be found in any idol made by human hands, Paul proclaims. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free. This deeply challenges the status quo and power structures in place during Paul’s lifetime. These statements may seem obvious to many of us today, but this kind of profound, systematic disruption and truth telling is exactly why Jesus is killed. Is it any wonder why Paul is constantly on the run?

MOVING FORWARD: When was the last time God’s message disrupted your world? How did you respond?
