MONDAY, December 11

Revelation 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in it; for the time is near.

The first thing that caught my eye in this reading from Revelation was about reading the words of scripture aloud. I have tried to develop—without long-term success—the habit of praying aloud the Daily Offices or even reading scripture out loud.

For me, the liturgy of the Daily Office can seem flat when it is just lying there on the page. And true confession time: reading the calls and responses aloud takes time. And I always seem to be in short supply of time. On those occasions when I have read the prayers and lessons aloud, the experience has been powerful—and with today’s reading as a prompt, I will redouble my aspirational efforts to make reading aloud a part of my daily devotion.

MOVING FORWARD: Read the lessons for today out loud.
