1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”

When you see someone approach you, to what do you respond first? Facial characteristics, or how tall the person is? Do you observe hairstyles or fashion choices? You see this person and immediately begin to form opinions. In just a few seconds, you have made up your mind about characteristics of this person and not a word has been spoken between you.

How do we see the hearts of others? Anatomically, we have a much easier time seeing outward appearances and actions than looking into someone’s heart and seeing their motivations. But God is calling us to look at each other with spiritual eyes and has equipped us with minds and hearts designed to be open to—and to flower in the light of—grace, love, peace, and hope. May God give us discerning and tender hearts and help us find ways to see and be open to the hearts of those we meet but do not yet know.

MOVING FORWARD: While you are out and about today, make eye contact and share a smile with at least three people you don’t know. Pray for them.
