MONDAY, August 12

Mark 9:42-50. For everyone will be salted with fire.

When I was in college, a long, long time ago, my parents lived overseas, and I would fly home twice a year for vacation. I used to look forward to the food on the plane. Back then it was a really nice meal, much better than the school cafeteria, and it even came with dessert.

On a recent mission trip to Central America, the stewardess on the plane gave us the choice between a cookie or a bag of lightly salted peanuts. That was it. I was disappointed but went for the peanuts. To tell you the truth, those peanuts were great. I even asked for another bag. A little salt really does go a long way.

Jesus knew this. He pushed his disciples to do and be more than they could have ever asked for or imagined. He was their salt and brought out the very best in them. Those lightly salted peanuts reminded me that God doesn't need us to be perfect. God loves us just the way we areā€”and too much to let us stay that way.
