Colossians 3:12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

Once upon a time, there was a dad who was worn out by his daughters’ constant bickering. He grabbed one of his undershirts, wrote I LOVE MY SISTER in giant letters with a marker on the front and back. He made his daughters wear the shirt together, on the front porch, in front of God and everybody in the neighborhood.

This brave father hoped that once the sisters were literally clothed in love, they would learn to get along better. I wish I could report that this tactic worked like a charm. Yes, my friends were clothed in love, but the love was only a label, not a true conversion of their hearts. They had been bound together, but it was not a harmonious bond.

We cannot be forced into loving each other; we cannot be bound together in perfect harmony by sharing a label. Rather, we must each clothe ourselves with a deep and abiding love, a love that binds us together in harmony and compassion.

MOVING FORWARD: How do you handle conflict between people you love? What are three ways you might respond in love, encouraging them to be bound in harmony and compassion?
