TUESDAY, June 13

Deuteronomy 30:14 No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe.

God’s “word”—not just the written word, but God’s very own self—is near us, even within us. Last summer I experienced a new dimension of the passage from Deuteronomy through my father’s World War II experiences. A dive-bomber who flew missions out of North Africa when I was born, my father had never told us details about his military life: “When you go to war, you do what you have to do, and you don’t make a good story of it later.”

Last August, my sister and my husband each discovered keys to start unlocking the mysterious treasure trove of stories our father couldn’t bring himself to tell us. We found the declassified diaries of the 86th Fighter Bomber Group—my father’s outfit. I sat at my computer and read about life in Algeria and Tunisia for American troops in 1943. As I imagined tents, salt-water showers, stifling heat, and dangerous missions, I could picture my father being there, doing his job, and becoming the man who would raise us. I savored what I learned about him.

MOVING FORWARD: What words—stories or memories—have come near to you to remind you of the goodness of God? Share your word or story with us by tagging it with #ForwardDaybyDay.
