SUNDAY, May 14      Easter 5

Psalm 31:16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, and in your loving-kindness save me.

I attended a retreat for priests who were feeling burned out and worn down. The front half of the retreat center was an old historic mansion set back from the road, hidden in a grove of trees. It was January, and a thick, white coating of snow covered the ground.

As we sat in the chapel for the morning session, weak sunlight peeked through the clouds, bouncing off the ground through the window next to me. During our contemplative prayer time, I closed my eyes and let my mind slowly empty of all my anxieties. I turned my face to the window, letting the warmth of the sun wash over me.

It was there, in that very moment, that I recalled these words from Psalm 31. I spent the remainder of prayer time with my face turned toward that window. I basked in that light, doing my best to be present to the moment—present to grace and God’s steadfast love.

MOVING FORWARD: At church today, sit near one of the windows. Bask in the warmth of the sun and God’s love for you.
