SATURDAY, April 15      Holy Saturday

Matthew 27:59-60a So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock.

What a gift that Joseph of Arimathea, a Pharisee, offers to Jesus, to the people who love Jesus, to God! He takes Jesus’ broken body, prepares it reverently, and lays it in the tomb, the very space in the rock that was intended as Joseph’s own resting place. This act of daring boldness, deep faith, and profound love could endanger Joseph; the religious and civil authorities could ostracize Joseph, making him an outcast socially, spiritually, or politically.

Offering his own tomb, tending to Jesus’ broken body is an act of humility and risk for Joseph of Arimathea. But he extends this radical hospitality anyway. He loves Jesus, and this is one final way he can express his love. What are the risks that we take to offer our deepest, most vulnerable selves to God, just as Joseph does? Are we willing to take similar risks in the service of loving Jesus that might endanger or ostracize us?

MOVING FORWARD: Perform an act of radical hospitality for someone today, for the love of Jesus.
