SATURDAY, December 16

Haggai 2:4-5 Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear.

The scripture readings for Advent are a mixed bag of waiting for the coming of the Messiah, watching prophecy unfold in Jesus’ life and ministry, anticipating Jesus’ ultimate betrayal and death, and awaiting his second coming—the arrival of God’s kingdom here on earth. In the midst of anticipation, joy, and grief, there is also a deep and profound comfort in knowing that the Holy Spirit is here, abiding with us.

The word abide is an interesting choice in our verse from Haggai. Abide indicates something very different from merely being present; to abide means remaining fixed in a stable state. Abiding means that there isn’t coming and going, going and coming. We don’t have to wonder where the Spirit of God is at any particular time—the Spirit is abiding here, with us, solid and safe. The Holy Spirit simply is, and it isn’t going anywhere.

MOVING FORWARD: Light a candle this evening and take comfort in the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit.
