THURSDAY, March 16

Romans 2:13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but the doers of the law who will be justified.

There is more to doing the law than simply following the rules. When I think of following the rules, I think about being compliant, meeting the minimum requirements established by an authority. I don’t think that is what Paul is talking about when he asks us to be doers of the law.

Doing the law carries flavors of authenticity and integrity, describing an alignment between inner thoughts and beliefs and outer actions and expressions. Doing the law is a sacramental act—an outward and visible sign of inner and spiritual grace.

It is one thing to have the law written down in the books and to be able to cite them in chapters and sections and quite another to have the law written on our hearts and demonstrated by our actions. Ultimately, to be a doer of the law means we have made God’s concerns our own and God’s desires the desires of our hearts.

MOVING FORWARD: Jesus asks us to love our enemies. “Do” the law today by praying for someone you do not like.
