TUESDAY, October 17

Matthew 10:16 See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

In Matthew’s Gospel, the people of the Jesus Movement are the vanguard of God’s resistance and liberation operation for the entire world that is held in bondage to sin and death. They are sheep sent into the midst of wolves, people of peace sent into a hostile and violent world, which will crucify their leader and persecute them. For large parts of the church today, it may seem that this danger and hostility has passed. Yet, theologian Karl Barth reminds us, “The church stands for the human against all systems and ideologies…Man has not to serve causes, but causes have to serve man.”

The work of resistance and liberation continues to be the work of the people of the Jesus Movement, challenging the sovereignty and sufficiency of our tangled human systems and reductive ideologies. Where do you experience hostility or resistance to your call to be a worker in the Jesus Movement, as expressed in our baptismal covenant? What are the wolves that threaten peace, justice, human dignity, and reconciliation in your community? How can you overcome them with the help of the Holy Spirit?

MOVING FORWARD: Has someone ever stood up for you? Who can you stand up for this week?
