FRIDAY, November 17

Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

In Christ, God has set out to bring an end to violence, oppression, hatred, and deprivation in all their forms. To accomplish that mission, God gave Jesus two hands and two feet.

Since his resurrection and ascension, Jesus continues that work through the hands and feet of his followers. But Jesus does more than give us marching orders, assessing how we are doing from a distance. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus works through our hands and feet to give earth a heavenly shape.

Without Jesus, our hands and feet are too small, too weak, and too fragile to heal creation’s wounds and right the world’s injustice. And because Jesus is—well, Jesus—he chooses to do his redeeming work through our frail and vulnerable selves.

When we feed the hungry, turn the other cheek, and love our enemy, the kingdom of heaven comes near. Jesus looses the power of heaven in this world through our very earthly hands and feet.

MOVING FORWARD: Pray with your hands—perhaps using rosary beads or a pocket labyrinth.
