WEDNESDAY, May 17

Psalm 72:6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, like showers that water the earth.

Using two riding lawn mowers and a tractor pulling the bush hog, my husband and our two boys can knock out mowing our entire property in one day if they diligently stay at it, from morning till evening. Mowing days are particularly exhausting during the summer, when the sun relentlessly threatens to kill our garden and grass. We feel a bittersweet sensation when, shortly after a long day of blast-furnace hot mowing, a rainstorm moves in. “Hurrah! Our garden and grass will not die!” And then we sigh. “Great. Now we will have to mow it all again, only sooner.”

Sometimes God’s love and provision can give us that same kind of bittersweet reaction. One day, I hope we can learn to stand in the rain of God’s grace and mercy and simply thank God for the sweetness, with no bitterness clinging at the back of our throats.
