SATURDAY, June 17

Psalm 27:5 One thing have I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.

My best childhood friend lived next door, and her mother, Mrs. Beaufort, became my model of perfect hospitality long before I knew that word. Even if my friend wasn’t home, I would go visit Mrs. Beaufort—and I was always welcome.

When I was nine, she taught me to cross-stitch a rooster on a dishtowel, a weeks-long project. She and I discussed important things while we stitched. She was fully present to me, as if she had nothing more to do than to visit with me. I loved just being in that house. Mrs. Beaufort’s house gave me a childhood glimpse of God’s house. We are invited to dwell in God’s house “all the days” of our lives, including today.

Ultimately, I believe we all yearn to “dwell in the house of the Lord,” where our Host is delighted to see us at the door and is ready to sit down and be fully present to us, where we are free to be ourselves without fear of being rejected or ignored, where we know we are valued and loved.

MOVING FORWARD: Where is the place that most reminds you of God’s house? Share a memory of that place or a photo of it with us by using #ForwardDaybyDay.
