Matthew 16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
Peter is sometimes inappropriately enthusiastic. Peter is so sure he can follow Jesus anywhere, but he fails as soon as Jesus is arrested, and then he becomes full of despair. Even after seeing the risen Christ, Peter seems to be lost and takes his friends fishing rather than getting busy on a gospel-spreading mission.
Oh, Peter, many times I have related to you with my own regrettable words and actions. But Peter’s experience also brings me hope. Over and over, Jesus comes to Peter to reassure him of his place in the community and among the disciples. This affirmation no doubt emboldens Peter to fulfill his destiny for the kingdom. May it be the same for me—and for all of us.
