TUESDAY, April 18      Tuesday in Easter Week

John 20:16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher).

Perhaps you have been in a crowded room, a high school gym, a parade, a subway car, or shopping mall when you have suddenly heard your name. I have run into acquaintances and friends and actually not heard them as they called out, “Hey, Elizabeth Marie, over here!” trying to catch my attention. Not until they called me by my name—not a nickname, not a title, but my name, did I realize they were speaking to me. And immediately in the midst of the noise and the hubbub, I responded.

There is something deeply humbling and reassuring to being known and called by our own name. I can only imagine the joy that Mary Magdalene feels when, upon hearing her name, she recognizes Jesus for who he is—her teacher and her Lord. What do we need to do so that we can better hear and recognize when God is calling us by our own name—the name by which we know ourselves, and the name by which we are known by God?

MOVING FORWARD: What does your name mean? Why did your parents select the name? Talk with them, if you can, about the process of choosing your name.
