Psalm 74:3 Turn your steps toward the endless ruins; the enemy has laid waste everything in your sanctuary.

On the Saturday my parents’ home was being destroyed by a tornado, I waited anxiously in another town. Once word reached us that my parents and my other siblings were safe, I headed to the store to buy supplies to take to them the next day.

I bought all the usual things—water, bread, and milk—and also hats for everyone to wear. Looking back, it seems a silly and trivial thing to have purchased hats, but I was grasping for a way to help in the midst of all my helpless feelings.

The next morning, I drove home as fast as I legally could. I wanted to set eyes both on my family and on the ruin left by the storm—to see the reality of it for myself. Thankfully, God is never overwhelmed by the ruin in our lives. Instead God’s loving steps are always turned toward us in love, walking alongside us in our pain, heartbreak, confusion, and loss, covering us with grace and mercy.

MOVING FORWARD: What items would you use to comfort loved ones in distress? How does God comfort you in times of trial?
