WEDNESDAY, July 18

Matthew 25:45 Then [Jesus] will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.”

Having come to New Orleans for spring break, my four students and I were assigned to a larger group from another university to gut houses all around the city. Hurricane Katrina had hit roughly seven months before, but it might as well have been yesterday, given the looks of things.

We started in Gentilly, on the far north side of town. At some point during the day, the owner stopped by and thanked us. He seemed a little befuddled, in the way that people are when they have lost everything they own. That’s how it was most every day in Lakeview, in the Upper Ninth Ward, in St. Bernard Parish. The residents were a little lost but grateful—and surprised—that so many people came to help.

Black and white, middle class and poor, college kids and dropouts—it didn’t matter. For a while at least, we all were family.

MOVING FORWARD: Has your “family” grown because of a natural disaster? How did the experience change the way you see the world?
