WEDNESDAY, April 19      Wednesday in Easter Week

Luke 24:32 They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?”

One Easter over a decade ago, I was nowhere near a church. There was no Christian community in my town—no people with whom I could celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. I found myself walking alongside a river near the border between Thailand and Burma, lonely and homesick. A family by the river motioned me over to their blanket. They were sharing a Sunday afternoon picnic of sticky rice and pork balls, laughing and playing.

Showing great patience with my halting language skills, we talked about our families and our lives. I can still recall the tingle of the spice from the pork on my lips, feel the sense of contentment and refreshment as I splashed in the river with the children. Complete strangers offered me hospitality—a place to belong—on a day when I was desperately yearning for community.

My heart was burning within me, and I believe their hearts were, too. This beautiful family of faithful Buddhists offered me a glimpse of the living Christ and the kingdom of heaven on that riverbank.

MOVING FORWARD: Make a new friend this week.
