SATURDAY, August 19

2 Samuel 16:10 But the king said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the LORD has said to him, ‘Curse David’, who then shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’”

We’re moving into our problem-plagued house, I had a fender bender, my secretary resigned, our dog got sick, I stepped on a rusty nail while barefoot, and the expensive coffee maker I bought for my wife as a move-in present broke on its first use. Together, these issues have taken the wind out of my sails.

I love the maturity David exhibits in facing Shimei. David is a man who knows suffering—Shimei’s curses and stones are not the end of his story. David intimately knows that God makes use of the unexpected.

Earlier today, I listened to a podcast featuring a woman preparing to run the Chicago marathon—and she was dreading it. While buying shoes for the race, a salesman told her, “The blessing is outside your comfort zone.” David is an old, seasoned runner. He has spent plenty of time running outside of his comfort zone; he knows the whole race—and he knows there will be blessings all along the way.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you have a friend who’s had a rough week? Find a way to comfort them.
