WEDNESDAY, September 19

John 12:24 Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

My Korean great-grandmother immigrated to Hawaii as a “picture bride” and was married to a stranger in a Maui sugarcane camp. She settled with her family in central Oahu and had a legendary garden behind her house. When she visited Korea, she always smuggled seeds back to Hawaii in a secret compartment in her bra, claiming that seeds in America just weren’t the same. She grew Korean pepper plants for her kimchi and saved their seeds, harvest after harvest.

Seeds, like a family, die out unless they find themselves in the correct external conditions. In taking the risk of growth, there is always a chance for life to flourish and multiply. My great-grandmother, Wha Soon Kim, crossed an ocean so I might live. These days, I spend time tending my own life, praying to create the necessary conditions for God to bless new life from hidden seeds.

MOVING FORWARD: Think about cultivating a salad or herb garden in your home during the winter months.
