TUESDAY, January 2

John 6:12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.”

We were wet, freezing, and famished. The two-hour drive home had been agony. The car’s heater was broken and rain had fallen throughout the outdoor concert. On that spring day in 1983, we listened to an Irish band most Americans didn’t know existed—U2. You’ve got to hear them, we told our friends, like prophets crying in the wilderness. The performance was epic. They sang about God and Jesus. We heard about the promised land.

On the way home, we stopped for dinner. Waiting hungrily for our meals, we noticed packets of crackers on the table and a bottle of steak sauce. Those Captain’s Wafers covered in A1 sauce remain one of the most satisfying “meals” I’ve ever had—like five barley loaves and two fish.

When a communion of fellowship feeds us, fragments are always left over. Gather them up so that none will be lost. Each of us is a barley loaf, each of us a fish. And Jesus sits patiently on a mountaintop, surrounded by a hungry world, waiting for us to arrive.
