Deuteronomy 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.

Yesterday we began Lent with a couple of questions. What do you treasure? Where is your heart? Today we hear God’s answers to those questions. We are God’s “treasured possession.” Moses tells the children of Israel that God’s heart is set on them, that God has chosen them to be treasured and set apart. Where God’s treasure is, there God’s heart is also.

What does it mean for us to be God’s treasured possession, to have God’s heart set on us—to be chosen? This chosen identity says something about God, and it also asks something of us. Being treasured describes God’s love, faithfulness, and covenantal loyalty toward us. This identity requires of us that same love, faithfulness, and loyalty to God and to one another.

If God sees us as treasures set apart, this means we also must see and relate to each other as God’s treasured possessions. If God’s heart is set on you, I too must give you my heart. If God has chosen you, how could I ever justify or defend rejecting you?

MOVING FORWARD: Set apart a treasure—a material item, a story, or simply your time—to share with someone you love today.
