WEDNESDAY, May 2

Acts 15:8-9 And God, who knows the human heart, testified to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us; and in cleansing their hearts by faith he has made no distinction between them and us.

I recently heard a professor describe seminary as a place where students are fond of “dressing up.” But bearing Christ into the world isn’t as easy as putting on an alb or collar, a cassock or chausible, or even wearing a cross around one’s neck. Bearing Christ into the world leaves us vulnerable, because when we follow his example, we see that Jesus lives his life with his soft heart entirely exposed. This is risky, and eventually Jesus is killed for this posture of love and servanthood.

In this passage we hear that God is working at the level of the human heart, cleansing and shaping this beating ball of muscle that is common to us all. These words also call to mind those times when the prophets rail against our hearts of stone, imploring us to grow hearts of flesh for the poor.

MOVING FORWARD: What would it look like to have a soft, exposed heart that beats along with Jesus’?
