SATURDAY, September 2

Psalm 116:1-2 I love the Lord because he has heard the voice of my supplication, because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.

The psalmist is certain that God is listening to him, saying later, “How shall I repay the Lord for all the good things he has done for me?” Listening is a good place to begin giving thanks. So often, prayer is a one-way conversation—and we miss rich opportunities to discern how God is working in our lives. Theologian and author Frederick Buechner impels us to simply listen to our lives: “God is speaking to you…of the mystery of where you have come from and is summoning you to where, if your soul is to be saved, you should go next.”

Periodically, I take an inventory of my life. Somewhere in this inventory—this list of thoughts, feelings, people, and actions—God speaks to me. When I truly listen to God’s voice, I find myself better equipped in trusting, learning, and acting on behalf of God’s loving guidance.

MOVING FORWARD: Take an inventory of your life today.
