FRIDAY, October 20

Matthew 11:2-3 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to [Jesus], “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”

The question John’s disciples pose to Jesus has a special urgency as John languishes in Herod’s prison. “Are you the one? The bringer of judgment and justice into the world?”

Jesus responds to them, not with a list of proof texts or an explanation of the hypostatic union or the Trinity, but with an invitation to become part of his story. “Go and tell John what you hear and see.” This is the invitation Jesus and the scriptures extend to us when we find ourselves searching for the One who will save us. “Come and see. Follow me. Let all who have ears listen! Go and tell what you hear and see.”

No abstract formulation of who Jesus is can replace participation in the story of Christ. How will you participate in the story of Christ today? How are you being called into loving service today? What are you willing to sacrifice for the beloved stranger in your midst?

MOVING FORWARD: To whom will you go and tell what you have heard and seen? Share your story of Jesus with us #ForwardDaybyDay.
