MONDAY, November 20

Matthew 17:5b This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!

In elementary school, we learned the multiplication tables by rote. To test our mastery, we had competitions. The teacher would go down the line, firing a problem at each student in turn. A wrong answer or a hesitation sent you to your seat. The winner was the last one standing.

I learned the tables quickly, but multiplication has never transformed my life. Lessons we can learn by rote rarely do. Deep, life-transforming truth seeps into and saturates our souls over time.

The disciples have been following Jesus for quite a while. Hardly a day has gone by without a lesson. The disciples have been trying hard to absorb what Christ is saying.

So when, on the Mount of the Transfiguration, God says, “Listen,” God is not calling Peter, James, John, and all the rest of us clueless knuckleheads. Instead, God is reminding us that we are wrestling with mystery—and that we have a trustworthy teacher.

MOVING FORWARD: Share a story about your elementary years with a young person in your life. Compare stories and see what you might learn from each other.
