SATURDAY, October 21

Matthew 11:7-8 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces.”

A number of years ago, I loaded my youth group into a van to participate in a protest. We missed Willie Nelson’s performance, and Joan Baez wasn’t coming through the camp for another week. The night before we showed up, someone had plowed down the rows of white crosses representing soldiers killed in action with a pickup truck. A few muddy tents stood along the side of the road.

Scattered, broken crosses…there was no glamor in the work of putting things back together. No celebrities serenaded us while we worked, only a scratchy radio.

Jesus reminds us that prophets of the kingdom are called to be terrifyingly vulnerable to a hostile world. Scattered, broken crosses may be all they—or any of us—leave behind. Through our baptism, we are called into unglamorous prophetic ministry: To take up our cross and follow Jesus through a world that often calls his brand of self-sacrificing love just plain crazy.

MOVING FORWARD: What unglamorous thing can you do today to strengthen the Body of Christ?
