Psalm 30:2-3 O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you restored me to health. You brought me up, O Lord from the dead; you restored my life as I was going down to the grave.
As if calling to give me the weather report, the latest person on the phone had informed me that I would need to see a spinal surgeon for the wonky disks in my neck. A hand specialist, a knee specialist, and now a guy who was going to do something to my spine. Add fibromyalgia and depression to that list and I was…well…depressed.
I can’t remember if I cried or shouted or hugged my dog really tight, but at that moment, I knew what it was to be in the pit, the grave. Many surgeries and a lot of physical therapy later, I also know what it is to be healed.
As Thomas Merton put it, that hard-won knowledge is “mercy within mercy within mercy.”
