WEDNESDAY, August 21

Psalm 119:145-176. I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost.

We have a new gadget in our car that tells us where to go. Punch in the address and wait a few seconds, and it shows you a map and starts barking instructions. Turn left. Turn right. Before you know it, you’re right where you need to be. It’s almost impossible to get lost.

I don’t know how I ever lived without this little contraption. Imagine if everyone had one. A world where no one was lost.

A close friend died a few months ago. It was hard for me to imagine life without him. He was a mentor, a counselor, and a friend for many, many years. He was always there for me in difficult times, offering his friendship and support. When he died, I felt alone and lost. My new gadget was no help at all.

At the funeral, I learned that I was not alone. Many others felt the same way. We all prayed together and shared stories and cried and even laughed. There was an immediate sense of community, like we were family. His death was still a cause for pain, but I was not alone. I knew a new day would come. All of a sudden I didn't feel lost. I was right where I was supposed to be.
