TUESDAY, January 22

Isaiah 44:20 He feeds on ashes; a deluded mind has led him astray, and he cannot save himself or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a fraud?”

Today, we hear Isaiah ridiculing the irrational beliefs of those who bow down to idols. And here we are, millennia later, with churches closing for lack of attendance while crowds keep all night vigil for the newest smart phone. Ancient and modern idol worshipers share a common yearning, planted deep within each of us by our Creator. We yearn because the Holy Spirit whispers in our hearts, “There is more.”

There is more—more goodness than our minds can imagine, our hands can create, or our individual understandings can grasp, more peace to satisfy our hearts and quiet our frantic worries, and more strength to overcome our weaknesses.

No earthly search will yield such abundance. To find it, we must explore our hearts with an openness that defies the world’s delusions. When we do, the One who whispers “more” will smile and embrace us with peace, love, and even more than we can ask or imagine.

MOVING FORWARD: Leave your smart phone unchecked tomorrow.
