SUNDAY, June 23    5 Pentecost

Luke 8:26-39.
The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

The demoniac who has been healed by Jesus wants to stay close to what has made him well, wants to follow. But Jesus tells him to stay home—that the best way to follow is by remaining where he is known and living out his transformation there.

The conventional version of this might be “Bloom where you’re planted.” After a major life change it can seem so much more appropriate to stay on the mountaintop, but those moments of transforming awareness are actually confirmed in the moment-to- moment choices and habits and practices that draw from that new power, amidst all the neighbors who can really see and notice the change in behavior.

The townspeople in this story ask Jesus to leave because of this healing—too much transformation is a threat to them. Perhaps the most effective tool for their own growth is not the miracle worker, but the man on whom the miracle has been worked.
