Matthew 11:28-29a Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.

This comforting invitation from Jesus has largely lost its original shock value. In the middle of a debate with the Pharisees about what one should and should not do on the day of rest, Jesus suddenly makes a bold claim that borders on blasphemy, “Come to me…and I will give you rest.”

Even though I believe that Jesus is—as Matthew says—the new Moses, the new law, and the Wisdom of God incarnate, I often find myself looking around for an easier course of study. I am more apt to wear myself out following the self-help books of the ambitious and well-regarded than to follow in the footsteps of the gentle, humble, and often-despised man from Galilee. God offers rest to those who walk in Jesus’ rigorous way of mercy and humility.

Giving Back: Help the sick, the shut-in, and the needy to rest in God’s words of unconditional love. Give a gift to Forward Movement today.
