Matthew 18:12b If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?
My goal was to help my students express their own beliefs clearly, and to encourage them to listen respectfully to differing ideas. Every semester, a handful of my students would want to know what I believed and why.
My answer to their question was, and remains, relatively simple. As a younger man, I had been bitter, angry, and judgmental—living a life that didn’t resemble the compassionate example Jesus gives. I was deeply lonely, hurting, and afraid. I was lost. Jesus searched me out, and I experienced God. That’s why I am a Christian.
