SUNDAY, December 24      Advent 4

Luke 1:38 Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Mary has plans. I’m sure she has been thinking and dreaming about married life and children. And then in one short moment, her entire life turns irrevocably, irreparably upside down.

Mary’s plans are in tatters. She is to bear a son, the Son of God and son of man—a child who will turn the world right-side up. She is bearing a son out of wedlock, possibly dooming her to being shunned, shamed, and stoned. And Mary looks at Gabriel and says, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”

My tattoo of the Virgin Mary reminds me that my plans mean nothing alongside God’s. If Mary had protested, fought back, or pushed for her own timeline, God would have found a way into the world, regardless. But Mary said, “Let it be.” Praise God for her willingness to be such a servant and vessel.

MOVING FORWARD: What do you have on your heart or mind that you need to “let it be?” How can you offer this as a gift to Jesus?
