Psalm 41:1-3 Happy are they who consider the poor and needy! the LORD will deliver them in the time of trouble. The LORD preserves them and keeps them alive, so that they may be happy in the land; he does not hand them over to the will of their enemies. The LORD sustains them on their sickbed and ministers to them in their illness.
The next time I visited my mom, I talked with her about my sense of helplessness. She had experience as a nurse helping hurting people find remedies for their pain. I told her that I didn’t know how to decide when to give someone money or not. I felt guilty about not following Jesus’ commandment of loving my neighbor as myself.
Mom sighed and thought a moment. After a while, she said, “All you can do is ask God to help you. If you see someone, and the Spirit moves you to give, then give. Don’t worry about not having enough for yourself—God will always take care of you. There will always be someone for you to help.”
MOVING FORWARD: Ask God to invite you to help someone today.
Today the Church remembers Thomas à Kempis, Priest, 1471.
