Isaiah 65:17a For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth.
We entered prison by choice, but the people who resided here had not. We would leave the prison in a couple of hours, but the men in their state-issued white and blue uniforms counted time in years, and twenty-five years was the minimum sentence levied on prisoners housed in this place.
We sang as many old, upbeat hymns as we could come up with, but the crowd favorite was clearly “I’ll Fly Away.” The residents smiled as they belted out, “Like a bird from these prison walls I’ll fly,” daring to sing out their hope in the midst of bleak circumstances.
Isaiah relays God’s promise that God is making the world and each of us more than what currently meets the eye. For now, the world is marred by brokenness and death. God does not provide escape, but in Jesus, God brings transformation.
