SUNDAY, February 25      2 Lent

Luke 8:1-3 Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources.

Luke is not a feminist by any stretch, but it is only in this gospel that we hear from Elizabeth as she recognizes Mary, “the mother of my Lord.” And Luke is the only gospel to recount Mary’s obedience to God: “Let it be with me according to your word,” and her glorious song, the Magnificat.

In these opening verses from chapter 8, Luke recalls the women who are with Jesus as he makes his way through the cities and villages. Luke names Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna, but also notes that there were many others.

Many others. As a woman and a mother of a daughter, I am heartened to imagine these strong women, traveling alongside Jesus, bringing to bear their varied gifts—perhaps even stopping to ask for directions when the caravan is lost.

MOVING FORWARD: Recall the women who have empowered your own ministry and offer them a note of thanks or a phone call. You can also share their stories with the younger women in your life.
