FRIDAY, August 25

Mark 12:37 “David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.

The crowd is excited about Jesus denouncing the scribes. I am convicted by my own scribe-like tendencies. I walk around places of worship in long robes; people often seat me in places of honor.

As I write, the sun is setting on a gorgeous summer day on the coast of California. Huge oaks tower over the room where I write, and through their silhouettes, twilight is falling flawlessly. But last night, ash from a forest fire filled the sky. The fire was a regional expression of climate change. What is my role in that destruction? Can I make any difference? Amidst uncertainty, I cling to the courage that my small contribution can be important. I give out of the abundance of my love of God’s creation and wait to see God’s transformative love at work through that small offering.
