MONDAY, February 26

Luke 8:44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his clothes, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped.

The woman in this story from Luke knows the biblical prohibitions about women and bleeding. In her twelve years of suffering, she has become an outcast, undesirable and unwanted. And yet she has faith in this miracle-worker Jesus—faith that even brushing the hem of his garment would heal what no doctor could.

If this was a story only about the woman’s extraordinary faith, it is well worth studying. But what is even more remarkable is the response: Jesus again defies expectation. He is not made unclean by the woman’s touch; instead, she is made whole. Jesus takes her pain and sickness and transforms them.

In the early 1990s, Princess Diana was photographed shaking hands with people diagnosed with HIV. So much was still unknown about HIV and fear of those living with it ran amok. But Diana didn’t wear gloves or shrink away from the ill and suffering. She knelt down, shook their hands, and looked in their eyes, saying, “HIV does not make people dangerous to know. You can shake their hands and give them a hug. Heaven knows they need it.”

MOVING FORWARD: Make a visit to someone from your church or faith community who is in the hospital.
