MONDAY, November 27

Psalm 106:15 He gave them what they asked, but sent leanness into their soul.

We don’t talk about idolatry much these days, but this ancient practice is still very common. We slip into idolatry any time we put something in the place that only God can rightly occupy.

There are many good things in this life: family, work, and possessions. But these will never heal our deepest wounds, and they cannot save us or give us eternal life. When we pursue anything other than the Holy Spirit’s peace that passes all understanding, we have become idolaters.

False gods always let us down because their promises are rooted in our capabilities and formed in our likenesses. They cannot nourish us, and our hearts begin to wither. Idolatry sends leanness into our souls, and we find ourselves hungry and empty.

Our souls will be at peace only when we let God be God, when we feast upon the bread of heaven, and when we give our whole hearts over to God’s word, instruction, and encouragement.

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever accidentally put yourself on a soul diet though idolatry or a lapse in your devotional practice? How did you fatten yourself up again?
