TUESDAY, February 27

Luke 9:17 And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Most of the time, I am too preoccupied with my own best-laid plans to listen to the still, small voice. But every once in a while, God makes some headway.

Our Easter dinner was planned: Ham in the oven, green beans simmering, glaze sliding down the Bundt cake. Our table would be full with family from out of town, and as the final anthem played during worship, I calculated what still needed to be done and planned a quick exit from coffee hour. There was no time for conversation and dawdling.

But then there was the couple and their son whose family lived too far to share an Easter meal. “Come,” said the still, small voice. And I invited them to join us.

And there was Marvin, slouched against the far side of the fellowship hall. He had been sleeping under the bridge when the church helped him out, paying for a few weeks in a motel. “Come,” said God. And I invited Marvin to join us.

Our table was full of unexpected guests, stories, and laughter. And when the last person pushed away from the table, the platters were full…with leftovers aplenty.

MOVING FORWARD: See how far your leftovers will stretch this week. Donate the money you save to the shelter or charity of your choice.
