FRIDAY, April 27

Acts 12:22-23 The people kept shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a mortal!” And immediately, because he had not given the glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

Pride places us at the center of our own lives. Pride can manifest itself by depending solely on ourselves at the expense of family or intimate relationships or in busyness that prevents us from engaging spiritual disciplines. Pride can result in us taking ownership for success as the result of our solitary effort and disregarding the contributions and experiences of others. As one of the so-called “seven deadly sins,” pride is a sure way to impede our relationship with God and one another.

The spiritual discipline of regular worship is a very effective antidote to pride. When we direct attention and energy toward worshiping God, we take it away from ourselves. We dethrone pride by inviting God to be the center of our lives. When we acknowledge God as the source of light and life, we make liars of voices suggesting our strength, or smarts, or will are sufficient to meet our needs. Herod’s pride results in his death—if we do not do all we can to place God in the center of our lives, our own pride could do the same.

MOVING FORWARD: Invite a friend to worship with you this Sunday.
