WEDNESDAY, September 27

Matthew 5:44-48 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

We focus so much on the word “perfect” in this story from Matthew and think of it as unattainable. But this misses the point: Jesus is calling us to a higher level of interaction with one another—to live more fully in the Spirit.

How do we come to a place in our lives where we can interact with the people we meet and see God in them, no matter who they are or what they may have done or left undone? We can only answer our deepest questions when we are in deep relationship with God and each other. Then, we learn what it means to be in the Spirit—that God is love and that God’s love has no boundaries. The love of God is alive, wondrous, and filled with hope. Are we willing to love like that too?

MOVING FORWARD: How do you wrestle with perfection? Is there something that needs to be more perfect in your life? Less perfect? What will you do about this?
